There is a difference between hunger and appetite with anorexia being the loss of the later. Whiles hunger can be said to be the natural feel for food to satisfy you, appetite is the desire for food to maintain optimum energy balance in the body.

PHYSIOLOGY OF APPETITE
Your brain, in combination with the process of metabolism, controls your appetite. Your central nervous system receives signals from the vagus nerve and hormonal signals such as ghrelin from the stomach, insulin from the pancreas and leptin from fat cells. Insulin and leptin stimulate the release of an appetite-decreaser called POMC-CART. On the other hand, the vagus nerve increases appetite receiving stimulation from ghrelin. High levels of blood insulin also stimulate fat storage.

Eat lots of fruits and veggies

Zinc is a taste buds “fixer” and its deficiency leads to the development of deadened taste buds. Vitamin C is another appetite-enhancer and unhealthy low levels cause loss of appetite.

In trying to get your appetite back on the road a very stipe hill should not be your first “journey”. In trying to get to a healthy destination of having your appetite back, instead of a heavy meal at one sitting like you use to do, try eating in smaller portion serving sizes. Because your mind is naturally the controller of whether your appetite button is on or off, a lesser challenge will most likely lead to your succeeding. As your appetite increases so should the portion serving sizes of your meals whiles you lower the frequency.

Get your favourite meal on the table
Something is your favourite when among the lot it’s the one that catches your attention and interest. So why not make it work for you in your time of anorexia by having your favourite meal. It is sure to get your appetite controllers (brain and metabolism) working.

Add colour and aroma to your plate
You eye will never miss a billboard with so many brightly coloured graphic designs. This you can use as a weapon to fight anorexia by bringing colour to your dishes. Vegetables are the sure paint you should be using.
While trying to paint your way to an increased appetite, never forget to get “aroma” a much bigger smell. A good aroma can help your develop appetite for any food.  Painting for the eyes and enhancing smell for the nose are good wheels to help your get your appetite back on the road.

Eat with family or friends
Maybe “lonely” is not giving your appetite an audience to perform. Eating with family and friends will surely motivate you to eat. It doesn’t have to be from one plate/bowl but sitting with them during meal time.

Exercise and get happy
The engine of the car needs to be heated to enhance a better “travel”. Lack of physical activity can have a negative effect on your whole appetite. You don’t have to do any strenuous exercise but simple ones like walking, chatting and laughing.
