10 KEY RECOMMENDED PRACTICES FOR INFANT & YOUNG CHILD FEEDING (BREASTFEEDING) FOR MOTHERS & COUNSOLERS | NUTALK

Mentioned below are extremely key/important breastfeeding practices for the promotion of a healthy baby.

1. Place infant/child skin-to-skin with mother immediately after birth
This will keep your baby warm and breathing well, help him or her reach the breast easily, and as well help you and your baby feel close.

2. Initiate breastfeeding within the first hour of birth.
Early breastfeeding helps the baby learn to breastfeed while the breast is still soft, and helps reduce your bleeding (hemorrhaging). Colostrum, the first thick yellowish milk, is good for your baby. Colostrum helps protect your baby from illness and helps remove the first dark stool.

4. Exclusively breastfeed (give no other food or drink not even water) from zero (0) up to six (6) months.
It’s scientifically and evidentially proven that the breast milk is nutritionally adequate to meet the nutritional needs of your baby for six (6) months.

5. Breastfeed frequently, day and night.
Breastfeed frequently to help your breast milk ‘come in’ and to ensure plenty of breast milk flow.

6. Breastfeed on demand every time the baby demands/wants to breastfeed.

7. Let the infant finish one breast and come off by him/her (self) before switching to the other breast.

8. Continue breastfeeding till the child is two (2) years of age or even longer.

9. Continue breastfeeding when infant/baby or mother is ill.

10. Mother needs to optimally eat and drink to satisfy her hunger and thirst.
