PROPER/GOOD LATCHING/ATTACHMENT OF YOUR BABY TO SUCKLE DURING BREASTFEEDING | NUTALK

Good attachment/latching of your baby allow for proper suckling and enhance good flow of breast milk. Good attachment prevents sore nipples and thus implies that breastfeeding should NEVER BE PAINFUL. If yours is seek help now or follow the steps indicated below.

HOW TO LATCH /ATTACH BABY TO BREASTFEED
»Use your nipple to tickle the center of your baby's bottom lip.
»This will encourage him to open his mouth wide (like he is yawning).
»Aim your nipple slightly towards the roof of his mouth, bringing baby to you, chin first.
Remember to never forcefully put the nipple into the baby’ mouth

SIGNS OF GOOD LATCHING/ATTACHMENT OF BABY

(As shown in insert “A” and “B” of the image above)
1. His/her nose is nearly touching your breast, that is, no further away than a credit card edge.
2. His/her mouth is wide open as shown in insert “A” of the picture below.
3. At least ½ inch of your breast around the base of your nipple is in his mouth.
4. His/her lips are flanged.
5. You can see more of the darker skin (areola) above the baby’s mouth than below.
6. The baby’s chin is touching your breast.
7. The baby’s lower lip is turn outwards and directly touching your areola.

Bad latching/positioning leads to sore nipples, sore inner-mouth (baby), blotted stomach of baby (as if they are satisfied but actually is filled-up with air) and will generally affect the general optimal nutrition of the baby.
