TIPS AND PRECAUTIONS ON CANNED FOODS | NUTALK

Now you buy a canned food and you are probably thinking it’s safe because it’s in an enclosed container. You are wrong!!!
READ EXPIRY DATE

One of the first things you should do when buying a canned food product is to have a close look at the expiry date. Make sure it is not expired and it’s about two months to away from expiration.

LOOK AT THE NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION

VERIFY MANUFACTURER’S INFORMATION
Make sure there is an indication of the manufacturer’s logo and contact number/address.

CAN INSPECTION
Please note that you should always check the can-container before opening.
If the can shows signs of deterioration such as rustiness, bulging, large dents, bulging lids, foul odour or sprays liquid when opening, throw it away as it may be contaminated with a toxin called Clostridium botulism (botulism).
If you suspect botulism, DO NOT TASTE THE FOOD.
This toxin is very rare but, is extremely dangerous and may even cause death

STORAGE
Most canned foods will stay in the refrigerator for about 3-4 days after opening. Once opened the air reacts to the metals and may leach onto your food. So always move them to another container for storage

WASHING
Do make it a point to wash all canned foods especially those that have liquid/semi-liquid contents before opening.
